The newly renovated concrete cell yard of a courtyard is Artwrite’s spiritual home for this issue. Our fellow students milling around, filled with dreams of the future, of taking their art into the world, are our inspiration. In this paradoxical environment, the imagination runs rife. How do the two coexist?

Concrete Dreams is a paradox, between the materiality and the metaphysical. Seemingly disparate, one can only be defined in the absence of the other. But, in this issue of Artwrite they exist in harmony and our writing is the avenue along which we can unpack the potential of art to form a whole.

Concrete is the heavy, the physical and the tangible. It’s pragmatic. Dreams are the metaphysical and abstract – they are universal but also deeply personal. When they are combined they are more than the sum of their parts. The philosophical boundaries around how we understand each begin to melt away as we begin to see how they inform each other.
